The WA Government is building a State of Energy, delivering energy security, and creating more local jobs, ensuring Collie stays at the centre of WA’s economic future.
Collie has always played a vital role in powering Western Australia, and this will continue.
Since 2018, the WA Government has committed more than $700 million to support Collie’s transition, guided by the Just Transition Working Group and the Collie Just Transition Plan. These commitments provide a solid foundation to prepare for the next phase of Collie’s transition.
The Collie Basin Consolidation Taskforce was set up in January 2026 to examine the future of coal assets in the basin and consider how Collie can continue to thrive as WA progresses towards retiring State-owned coal-fired power generation by 2030.
The Taskforce brought together mine operators, major customers, unions, community representatives and government agencies to investigate opportunities to strengthen energy security, workforce impacts and future land use planning, while supporting Collie’s ongoing transition.
Collie Basin Consolidation Taskforce Report
The Taskforce provided its final report to Government in August 2026. The report outlines opportunities to improve coordination across coal supply, and highlights the complexity of balancing energy security, industrial demand, workforce impacts, and long-term land use outcomes while supporting Collie's Just Transition. The WA Government has accepted all the Taskforce’s findings and will implement more immediate and medium-term actions as part of its Plan for the Collie Basin.
The Plan focuses on three key priorities: energy security, workforce transition, and future jobs. It outlines targeted measures to support workers, accelerate new industry and economic diversification, strengthen planning for rehabilitation, decommissioning, and future land use, and expand government support for the region as it adapts to change.

Collie: State Development Area
Collie has also been confirmed as WA’s second State Development Area (SDA), helping to accelerate land activation and industry attraction for Collie’s Coolangatta Industrial Estate, Shotts Strategic Industrial Area and key connecting corridors.
The State Development Area will:
- provide certainty for existing investors;
- attract new industry and investment;
- support infrastructure coordination and delivery;
- create opportunities for long-term skilled employment; and
- help drive Collie's economic transition beyond coal-fired power generation.
The SDA will provide a coordinated framework to support future industries, including green manufacturing, clean energy, minerals processing and defence-related industries.
