Maylands school celebrates one hundred years
31/7/03
One of Western Australia's oldest schools has reached a century in education.
Speaking at the official Centenary celebrations for Maylands Primary School today, Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter congratulated teachers and students past and present on their contribution to the school's rich tradition and history.
"Maylands Primary School opened on July 13, 1903 and has been in continuous operation for the ensuing 100 years," Mr Carpenter said.
"Planning for the Centenary celebrations has taken place over the past 18 months, with staff and community members contributing to a collection of memorabilia and historical research.
"Maylands Primary School has created a unique culture created over the last 100 years.
"Today, as in past years, students at the school have come from a wide range of cultures.
"The school continues to acknowledge diversity and the school culture is one of truly inclusive practice."
Mr Carpenter said the celebrations also acknowledged the pending closure of the school.
"We announced in February last year that Maylands Primary School, along with East Maylands Primary School, would close at the end of this year," he said.
"The schools will amalgamate with students to attend the brand new $5million Maylands Peninsula Primary School being built at the East Maylands Primary School site for the start of the 2004 school year.
"The new school will have modern and innovative facilities designed for 21st century educational practices, and is the best way to ensure a quality education for local children."
Mr Carpenter said the social and historical significance of the Maylands Primary School site had been recognised following its recent interim listing on the State's heritage register.
