Between 2018 and 2022, there were 943 reported crashes on roads in the Kimberley region. Of these, 18% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured.

Between 2018 and 2022, there were 270 people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in reported crashes, including 42 fatalities and 228 people seriously injured. This equates to 145.4 people KSI per 100,000 population.

Demographic data

Of those 270 people KSI between 2018-2022:

  • 83% were occupants of motor vehicles
  • 10% were pedestrians
  • 5% were motorcyclists
  • 2% were cyclists

Over half (59%) of people KSI were male, while 38% were female and 3% had no sex recorded.

The three most common age groups of people KSI were:

  • 20-29 years old (27%)
  • 30-39 years old (22%)
  • 0-16 years old (13%)

Common crash circumstances

People KSI were most often injured in:

  • Non-collision crashes (43%)
  • Hit object crashes (28%)
  • Hit pedestrian crashes (9%)

People KSI were most often in crashes on:

  • 110 km/h sections of road (62%)
  • 50 km/h sections of road (20%)
  • 60 km/h sections of road (5%)

Of those people KSI, 13% were involved in crashes at intersections.

Almost half (48%) were involved in crashes on state roads, while 37% were involved in crashes on local roads and the remaining 16% were involved in crashes on other types of roads, road-related areas or the location was not recorded.

Contributing factors

  • 29% of people KSI were in crashes where speed was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 7% were in crashes where inattention was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 19% were in crashes where fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 26% of motor vehicle occupants KSI were not wearing a seatbelt
  • 14% of motorcyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet
