Statistics overview
Between 2018 and 2022, there were 1,864 reported crashes on roads in the Mid West-Gascoyne region. Of these, 14% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured.
Between 2018 and 2022, there were 335 people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in reported crashes, including 46 fatalities and 289 people seriously injured. This equates to 105 people KSI per 100,000 population.
Demographic data
Of those 335 people KSI between 2018-2022:
- 75% were occupants of motor vehicles
- 16% were motorcyclists
- 7% were pedestrians
- 2% were cyclists
Nearly two-thirds (63%) of people KSI were male, while 36% were female and 1% had no sex recorded.
The three most common age groups of people KSI were:
- 20-29 years old (22%)
- 30-39 years old (18%)
- 50-59 years old (14%)
Common crash circumstances
People KSI were most often injured in:
- Non-collision crashes (31%)
- Hit object crashes (27%)
- Head on crashes (12%)
People KSI were most often in crashes on:
- 110 km/h sections of road (62%)
- 50 km/h sections of road (16%)
- 60 km/h sections of road (8%)
Of those people KSI, 13% were involved in crashes at intersections.
Approximately half (55%) were involved in crashes on state roads, while 41% were involved in crashes on local roads and the remaining 5% were involved in crashes on other types of roads, road-related areas or the location was not recorded.
Contributing factors
Contributing behavioural factors (cannot be summed):
- 23% of people KSI were in crashes where speed was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 8% were in crashes where inattention was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 16% were in crashes where fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 13% of motor vehicle occupants KSI were not wearing a seatbelt
- 7% of motorcyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet
