Between 2018 and 2022, there were 2,604 reported crashes on roads in the Wheatbelt region. Of these, 24% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured.

Between 2018 and 2022, there were 832 people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in reported crashes, including 143 fatalities and 689 people seriously injured. This equates to 223.6 people KSI per 100,000 population.

Demographic data

Of those 832 people KSI between 2018-2022:

  • 87% were occupants of motor vehicles
  • 11% were motorcyclists
  • 2% were pedestrians
  • 0% were cyclists

Almost two-thirds (65%) of people KSI were male, 34% were female and 1% had no sex recorded.

The three most common age groups of people KSI were:

  • 20-29 years old (22%)
  • 30-39 years old (15%)
  • 50-59 years old (15%)

Common crash circumstances

People KSI were most often injured in:

  • Hit object crashes (46%)
  • Non-collision crashes (27%)
  • Head on crashes (11%)

People KSI were most often in crashes on:

  • 110 km/h sections of road (76%)
  • 50 km/h sections of road (6%)
  • 100 km/h sections of road (5%)

One in ten (10%) people KSI were involved in crashes at intersections.

Approximately half (53%) of people KSI were involved in crashes on state roads, 42% were involved in crashes on local roads and the remaining 5% were involved in crashes on other types of roads, road-related areas or the location was not recorded.

Contributing factors

Contributing behavioural factors (cannot be summed):

  • 26% of people KSI were in crashes where speed was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 10% were in crashes where inattention was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 26% were in crashes where fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor
  • 8% of motor vehicle occupants KSI were not wearing a seatbelt
  • 1% of motorcyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet
