Led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, June Oscar AO, Wiyi Yani U Thangani marks the first time since 1986 that First Nations women and girls have been consulted as a collective about their rights needs and aspirations.
As stated in the Wiyi Yani U Thangani Report, First Nations women and girls are strong, brave, determined and resilient—they have remarkable skills, knowledge and boundless potential.
The structural inequalities and discrimination that First Nations women and girls face are unacceptable and must be addressed and overcome. The Wiyi Yani U Thangani Report puts forward an ambitious and necessary First Nations female-lead plan for the structural change required to do this.
ACHRA supports the Report’s principles, key findings, overarching recommendations and pathways forward. This includes Commissioner Oscar’s call that the Australian Government supports and resources a First Nations women and girls advisory body, a national summit and the development of a national First Nations gender equality framework.
AHCRA members commit to advocating for the implementation of these measures, as well as to embedding Wiyi Yani U Thangani into our own organisational goals and projects.
