State Cabinet records are historically significant documents that reveal key decisions made by the government of the day. Some of the issues covered in the 1991 State Cabinet records include:

Introducing legislation to appoint a Director of Public Prosecutions; East Perth Redevelopment; conservation and future use Fremantle Prison; approval of an Act to make provision for and regulate Human Reproductive Technology; and discussions about Freedom of Information legislation. In April 1991 State Cabinet introduced legislation to make the wearing of bicycle helmets compulsory and this was to become legally enforceable on 1 January 1992. It included a rebate scheme whereby parents with a Health Care card were entitled to a $10 rebate if they purchased a helmet for their child through a school.

WA State Cabinet records in the State Archives Collection are opened to the public after 30 years to reveal the official decisions that have shaped our State. State Cabinet records are held by the State Records Office (SRO), the authority responsible for identifying, managing, preserving, and providing the community with an information service about the State’s archives.

1991 State Cabinet papers have been digitised and the SRO has created a Guide to the 1991 State Cabinet Records that describes the papers, key issues and historical context for decisions at the time. The guide and papers can be accessed online.
