This March 2021 Quarterly Financial Results Report provides financial results for the Western Australian public sector for the nine months to 31 March 2021.

The general government sector recorded an operating surplus of $2,363 million for the nine months to 31 March 2021. General government revenue for the period was $3,678 million higher than last year, due largely to higher royalty income, the timing of dividend revenue and higher tax collections. General government expenses were $3,754 million higher, mainly due to the recognition (as a non-cash expense) of two Native Title settlements finalised earlier this financial year, and the impacts of pandemic response and recovery measures.

Total public sector net debt stood at $33.6 billion at 31 March 2021, down from $35.4 billion at 30 June 2020.

Care should be exercised in extrapolating the likely outcome for the 2020-21 year based on the results to date. Seasonal and other timing factors that impact the State’s finances make full-year estimation difficult. Final results for 2020-21 will be provided in the 2020 21 Annual Report on State Finances (due for release by 28 September 2021).
