Community organisations providing social housing will soon be able to apply for grants to support the building of new properties and refurbish existing properties. The grants will also fund much needed property maintenance in remote communities across WA.

The grants will be delivered under The Department of Communities $319 million Social Housing Economic Recovery Package which aims to ensure vulnerable Western Australians have access to safe and secure housing, while supporting jobs and economic development in our state.

A total of $92.8 million has been allocated for the grants program. This funding will include $46.5 million for refurbishment of existing assets, along with $33 million for new community housing owned or operated assets to be built. An additional $13.3 million will be allocated for maintenance in remote Aboriginal communities.

The new housing construction grants program will be open to registered community housing organisations and Local Government Authorities. The refurbishment grants program will be open to community housing organisations with an existing service agreement with the Department of Communities and Local Government Authorities.

The remote Aboriginal community maintenance grants program will only be open to remote Aboriginal communities.

The grants process will be open from 1 September 2021 and grants awarded to successful applicants from December 2021 for refurbishments and remote communities.
