October is WA Bike Month – Western Australia’s annual celebration of bike riding.

A State Government initiative funded the Department of Transport and administered by WestCycle, Bike Month aims to promote and encourage bike riding for transport, fun and a healthier lifestyle.

The Road Safety Commission provides cycle safety information to help all road and path users share space and make every journey safe.

To coincide with Bike Month, this October the Commission is promoting the importance of visibility when riding a bike with its Ride Bright campaign. Further, the Commission launched its Be Seen. Be Safe campaign which encourages eRideable users to ‘Ride like the 80s’ with loud clothes, bright lights and rad reflectors.

It is hoped these campaigns remind Western Australians that bikes must be fitted with lights and reflectors and they can also choose to improve their visibility with reflective stickers and reflective arm bands and ankle straps to make them more easily recognisable as a human when riding at night.

Other top tips this Bike Month include:

  • Drivers must leave a minimum passing distance when overtaking bike riders travelling in the same direction.   On roads that are 60km/h or less, the minimum passing distance is 1 metre, while on roads that are more than 60km/h the safe distance is 1.5 metres.

  • Cyclists and eRiders no longer need to dismount at pedestrian crossings and can simply ride across. This new rule applies when the rider enters the crossing from the connected path and not the road. Riders must not exceed 10km/h and give way to any pedestrians when riding over the crossing.
