Now in its 21st year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual nation-wide event where all primary school aged children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. This could include walking, cycling, skating, or scooting.
Last year, WA Police reported three children injured in school zone crashes, one of whom was seriously injured.
Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner urged all motorists and other road users to take extra care.
"Primary School aged children, many of whom are still learning about the road environment can be unpredictable," said Mr Warner.
"I ask all road users to be extra vigilant for our youngest road users on your local roads where children walk and commute, in school zones particularly at drop off and pick up times and areas where students might be crossing roads this Friday.
“Walk Safely to School Day is a great initiative, not only to encourage children to be more active, but it’s an opportunity for students to become more aware of their surroundings and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviours.”
The Road Safety Commission is supporting Walk Safely to School Day via a $10,000 (plus GST) Road Safety Community Project funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account.
