Abalone fishing is a popular recreational activity, with about 18,500 licences in the 2020/21 season.

Licence holders will be allowed to fish in the West Coast Zone, from Busselton Jetty to the Moore River, taking place over four designated one-hour sessions.

If deemed safe to proceed, licensed fishers can fish for abalone between 7am and 8am on:

  •           Saturday 11 December 2021
  •           Saturday 8 January 2022
  •           Saturday 5 February 2022
  •           Saturday 19 February 2022

Local sea conditions can vary between fishing locations and fishers must take responsibility for their own safety – at no time should fishers enter the water unless they are confident in their ability to handle the sea conditions. Safety tips for abalone fishing are available on the SLSWA website.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development would like to issue a reminder that no catch is worth risking a life.

Rules relating to abalone fishing, including size and bag limits, are available on the recreational fishing guide.
