Heritage places given special protection

A Conservation Order has been placed on the historic East Perth Power Station to safeguard its future.

Heritage Minister John Castrilli said the East Perth Power Station played a significant role in Western Australia's history and was one of Australia's few remaining large-scale industrial utilities from the early 20th century.

He said the Conservation Order would protect the East Perth Power Station until the process for reinstatement to the State Register of Heritage Places could be restarted.

The registration of the power station became invalid in 2000, when the owner, Western Power, was no longer classified as an 'agent of the crown'.

A Conservation Order was also placed over the Beaufort Street Terraces, a group of brick, stucco, and iron terraces houses built in 1897 in the Federation Filigree style. The interim listing for these properties lapsed in July 2008.

"The Heritage Council of Western Australia is in the process of applying to the Supreme Court to waiver the normal five-year period barring re-entry on the register for the power station and Beaufort Street Terraces," Mr Castrilli said.

"The Conservation Orders will protect these properties while the waiver is sought and the process to re-enter the properties on the register is completed."
