WAIS athletes drive games success

Western Australia's most successful Commonwealth Games contingent has been welcomed home by the Premier Colin Barnett in Perth today.

The WA members of the Australian team collected 16 gold medals, nine silver and two bronze, representing the State's best ever return from a Commonwealth Games. 

The Premier said the role of the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) was pivotal in Australia's success at the Commonwealth Games.

"Once again, WA punched above its weight by providing a large proportion of the medals won in Delhi," Mr Barnett said.

WA provided 38 athletes, with 31 of those supported by WAIS.

"The tremendous preparation our athletes gain through the coaching and facilities on offer at WAIS certainly paved the way for our success," Mr Barnett said.

"Like many other West Australians who stayed up to watch events, I was enthralled by the talent and skills on offer, and I'm very pleased to be able to give them the welcome home they deserve.

"The State Government is committed to continue to provide funding for WAIS in the lead-up for the 2012 London Olympics, where I'm sure our athletes will once again stand out."

The State Government, through the Department of Sport and Recreation, contributed $60,000 to fund the Commonwealth Games team.
