Acting Premier announces $1million boost for unique interpretive playground
19/7/06
Acting Premier Eric Ripper today announced more than $1million to go towards building a unique interpretive playground on the Victoria Park foreshore of the Swan River.
Mr Ripper presented the Lotterywest cheque for $1,056,305 to the Mayor of Victoria Park, Mick Lee.
The playground in McCallum Park is to be based on the geography of the Perth Water Basin. Individual buildings, structures and landscapes will be recreated in the form of children's play equipment and spaces.
Mr Ripper said the park would be an outstanding community facility.
"With this new playground, children can enjoy playing while learning about structures and landscapes that are an integral part of their physical, social and cultural lifestyle," he said.
The playground was selected by the Year of the Built Environment State Steering Committee as the Icon Project of the Year, which was supported by the State Government.
The project is part of a wider initiative by the Town of Victoria Park, to redevelop the entire McCallum Park foreshore area.
The total cost of the project, including the interpretive park, is more than $9million.
Mr Ripper said WA was the only Australian State where profits from lottery products were distributed directly back to the community.
"Lotterywest plays an important role in WA, with 30 cents in every dollar spent on lottery products going towards projects that directly benefit our community," the Acting Premier said.
"This grant brings total Lotterywest funding for community projects in the Town of Victoria Park to more than $1.3million."
