1997 Beazley Medal has been won by Mamie Tong from Penrhos College (A/Min)
7/1/98
The 1997 Beazley Medal, awarded to the student who achieves the highest Curriculum Council Award Score in the Tertiary Entrance Examinations, has been won by Mamie Tong from Penrhos College.
Acting Education Minister Mike Board said this morning that Mamie was a clear winner of the prestigious award, with a Curriculum Council Award Score of 95.91 per cent.
This year was the first in which the Beazley Medal winner had to achieve excellent marks in both humanities/social science subjects and quantitative/science subjects. Changes introduced for 1997 mean that a student's Curriculum Council Award Score is the average of their top five TEE scaled marks. At least two of the five subjects must be humanities/social science subjects (list A attached) and two must be quantitative/science subjects (list B attached).
"Mamie achieved very high marks in all of her TEE subjects - applicable mathematics, calculus, chemistry, economics, English literature and physics," Mr Board said.
"Mamie's scaled marks for all six subjects were in the nineties, ranging from 92.9 per cent to 99.7 per cent. This depth of ability across both maths, science and humanities subjects was an important factor in her success."
More than 11,800 students sat their TEE exams covering 31 subjects over a 13-day period in November last year.
"The requirement for students to show breadth and balance in their achievement reflects a fundamental philosophy of the draft new curriculum framework, currently being developed by the Curriculum Council," Mr Board said.
Second to Mamie Tong was Hale School student Adam Sharpe who achieved the second highest Curriculum Council Award Score of 95.48. Adam received a General Exhibition and the French Subject Exhibition Awards.
Other outstanding students include eight from Christ Church Grammar School who each won one of the 40 available General Exhibition Awards. Christ Church classmates Janos Locsei; Wei Yao Luo; Luke Dunlop; Gareth Yeo; and Kevin Ho all received General Exhibitions and also achieved a scaled mark of 100 in at least one subject - Janos in calculus and physics; Wei in calculus; Luke in chemistry; Gareth in calculus, chemistry and physics and Kevin in calculus.
From Mirrabooka Senior High School, student John Seng Tan achieved a Curriculum Council Award Score of 91.01 and will receive a General Exhibition and subject exhibitions in applicable mathematics and economics.
Two Governor Stirling Senior High School students, Yvonne Jujnovich and Connull Leslie, won General Exhibitions.
Yvonne, who was only 16 when she sat her TEE, had double cause for New Year celebrations. Her 17th birthday was on January 3, a couple of days after she received her impressive results of 93.
Connull from Wananami in the Kimberley has stayed at Swanleigh Hostel in Middle Swan for the past three years while studying at Governor Stirling. Connull received a score of 92.25 and carried out most of his education in small country schools where his parents were teaching.
The top student attending a school outside the metropolitan area was Joshua Beaver from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School. Joshua achieved a Curriculum Council Award Score of 92.47 and was awarded a General Exhibition.
For the second year in a row, awards were also made for a number of wholly school-assessed (non-TEE) subjects. Matthew Brown of CBC Fremantle won a Certificate of Distinction for his work in interactive media.
With students realising the importance of technology, interactive media has quickly become a very popular subject. In interactive media, students develop expertise in the development of interactive media products and use them to address personal, community and industry needs.
The assessment panel said Matthew was a worthy winner, demonstrating all subject outcomes at a very high level.
Lindsay Schilling, from Narrogin Senior High School, won the Certificate of Distinction for work studies, another of the wholly school-assessed subjects.
Presentation of the Awards and Exhibitions will take place at a ceremony at Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia beginning at 1.30pm on Thursday, January 22.
