Delay in Carmen Lawrence's resignation outrageous
4/2/94
Premier Richard Court today said that it would be outrageous if Carmen Lawrence delayed her resignation from State Parliament so that a by-election could not be held for the State seat of Glendalough on the same day as the by-election for the Federal seat of Fremantle.
Mr Court said that if Carmen Lawrence did not resign her seat before February 11, 1994 then a by-election could not be held in Glendalough on Saturday, March 12, 1994 which is the date Labor has suggested for the by-election in Fremantle.
"If this occurs, then Fremantle will have an elected representative while the people of Glendalough will have no member of Parliament," he said.
"Carmen Lawrence should resign her seat immediately so that proper arrangements can be made for a by-election in Glendalough as soon as possible.
"It is totally immoral for her to be campaigning actively for a Federal seat while being paid for representing a State seat which she refuses to vacate so that a new member can be selected.
"Carmen Lawrence should end her tricks and resign her seat today."
