Royal Show visitors will have the chance to see the latest developments in Western Australian schools, including the use of the Internet, at the Education Department's 1996 Royal Show exhibition officially opened today by Education Minister Colin Barnett.

The exhibition, in the Campbell Pavilion, features a live link-up to the world via the Internet supporting this year's exhibition theme: 'Schools: A World of Difference'.

"The Education Department's display is a snapshot of education in WA Government schools and reflects the vast number of programs that equip students with a range of skills to succeed professionally and personally," Mr Barnett said.

"I urge families to take the time to step inside the Campbell Pavilion to see for themselves this great range of initiatives on display."

Mr Barnett said that the Internet's use in schools would be a feature of this year's exhibition and would highlight links with overseas schools.

During the official opening, students from Craigie Senior High School took digital photographs which were instantly published on the Education Department's Internet Royal Show page.

The exhibition also includes displays for the Languages Other Than English program which will see all students from Years Three to 10 study a second language by the year 2000 and the Pacific School Games, which will take place in December. The games will be the largest youth sporting event ever held in the southern hemisphere.

Other displays will feature environmental education involving South Perth and Serpentine Primary Schools and a display highlighting the benefits of teaching in the North-West, involving teachers from the Karratha and Hedland education districts.
