Premier Richard Court says the thoughts of most Western Australians will be with a group of local athletes in their quest for gold at next month's Atlanta Olympics.

In letters to Willetton gymnast Jenny Smith, Lynwood judo team member Miklos Szabo, Leeming hockey player Mark Hager, Willetton hockey player Jackie Pereira and Melville high jumper Chris Anderson, Mr Court said they could be proud of their achievement in being selected in the nation's Olympic team.

"I am delighted at the number and calibre of WA athletes in the team bound for Atlanta," Mr Court said.

"It indicates that the reputation and standards of sport in this State are being upheld at the highest level and reflects the ability of our coaches and the sheer talent and dedication of our sportsmen and women."

Mr Court said that while medal-winning performances were the dream of all athletes going to the games, just making the team and competing in the world's greatest sporting spectacle was an outstanding achievement in itself.

"I know their families and friends are proud of what they have achieved and they and their teammates will carry the interest and best wishes of Western Australians for success in Atlanta," he said.
