No go ahead for Oakajee industrial estate before further assessment
9/2/95
Environment Minister and Member for Greenough Kevin Minson has called for more detail on potential environmental impacts of the planned industrial estate at Oakajee before deciding if the proposal can go ahead.
Mr Minson said he was due to release the Environmental Protection Authority's advice on the proposal but used his powers under the Environmental Protection Act to request further environmental assessment.
The proponent, LandCorp, wants to establish a 1000-hectare park at the site, 23 kilometres north of Geraldton, to cater for heavy industry in the region.
"Because the underlying bedrock is mainly porous limestone there may be problems containing contaminants in the event of a spill and pollutants may leach into groundwater and subsequently into the ocean," Mr Minson said.
"On another front, if Oakajee went ahead and was developed to its full potential, then it is possible that a port would also be created which could have wide-ranging environmental impacts.
"This was not addressed in the information provided to the EPA for assessment.
"The EPA advises me that these issues need further examination and the Department of Resources Development has agreed to provide the necessary information."
Mr Minson said he had also asked the EPA for advice on the relationship of the Oakajee site to the regional plan review being conducted by the Department of Planning and Urban Development.
The timing for this review meant it would be several months at least before the EPA provided its report and recommendations on Oakajee to the Minister.
