Release of SRA report showing a number of Subi Centro project milestones being met
26/11/99
The Subiaco Redevelopment Authority (SRA) has had a year of achievement, with a number of project milestones being met at its Subi Centro project.
Releasing the SRA's annual report, Planning Minister Graham Kierath said Subiaco was ready to take on the new Millennium.
"One of the milestones was the official opening of the new $34.4 million Subiaco railway station and rail tunnel," Mr Kierath said.
"The contract was brought in ahead of time and on budget, and with no delays due to industrial action."
The Minister said 1998-99 financial year was a bumper year for housing starts in Subi Centro's residential neighbourhood of Subiaco Gardens.
"To the end of the financial year, 23 houses and apartments were finished and more are under construction or seeking planning approvals. This compares with five completed dwellings in the previous year," he said.
The first of the commercial/mixed use lots was sold by tender during 1999.
The seven lots flanking Centro Avenue achieved higher than expected prices and as of June 30 construction of commercial/residential buildings on Centro Avenue had commenced on all seven lots.
Construction of these first seven commercial buildings is expected to be completed by January 2000.
Mr Kierath said the year had been a milestone for Subiaco's parks and gardens, with the 2.6ha Subiaco Common and Greenway being handed over to the people of Subiaco by the Premier.
"Subiaco Common is a dynamic community resource with a large lake, recreational facilities, walking and cycling paths, extensive landscaping, shaded seating and barbecue areas and a children's playground," the Minister said.
"Subiaco Square, which is the hub of the redevelopment project, now has apartments, shops and a supermarket surrounding the square.
"It will be officially handed over to the people of Subiaco this weekend."
Mr Kierath said he was pleased that the authority had negotiated successfully BOC Gases' early departure from its Price Street site.
"The agreement was approved by BOC's London-based board of directors, and will see the company move from its premises some 20 years ahead of lease requirements," he said.
"The site will be transformed into residential lots."
