Government buys Nunn block for new national park

The State Government has reached agreement to buy a former private forest block near Bridgetown to include in Dalgarup National Park.
Environment Minister Dr Judy Edwards today said the Government would buy the 174ha piece of land from the National Trust.
"The Nunn block includes jarrah, karri and blackbutt forest and was donated to the National Trust by the former Wesfarmers-owned company, Bunnings Forests Products, now Sotico, in November 2002," Dr Edwards said.
"The Department of Conservation and Land Management, acting on behalf of the State Government, has negotiated an outcome that will enable the land to be added to the new national park."
The Minister said the land joined the south-east corner of the proposed Dalgarup National Park, one of 30 new national parks and nature reserves being created under the Government's 'Protecting Our Old-Growth Forests' policy. It also joined the northern part of the Nelson forest, a proposed Forest Conservation Area.
"The natural bushland of Nunn block is in excellent condition," Dr Edwards said.
"The block is also at the northern range of the karri ecosystems and contains some fine stands of mature blackbutt.
"It will enhance the values of the new Dalgarup National Park and the Government is pleased that it has been able to meet local community expectations by purchasing it for inclusion in the conservation estate."
