A major upgrading of Marble Bar Road between the townsite and Shaw River will begin next month and be completed in September.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today that Brierty Contractors Pty Ltd had won a $5.763million contract to reconstruct and seal nearly 20km of the road.
"Sealing the road will greatly improve safety and save vehicle and road maintenance costs," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The works include construction of nine floodways, which will help reduce road closures and flood damage.
"The road services regional communities and the mining and pastoral industries and is an important tourist route.
"It is also a vital freight route carrying more than 200 heavy haulage vehicle journeys each week.
"People who use the road regularly have been waiting for these improvements for a long time."
