Justice Minister Michelle Roberts today announced the State's newest prison development would be known as the 'Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women'.
Situated in Bentley, Mrs Roberts said the state-of-the-art low security prison was expected to become operational in May and would feature the latest high-tech security measures.
"In line with our commitments to ensure the security of people living in close proximity to the prison, these measures include an alarmed chain-link perimeter fence with cameras and lighting," the Minister said.
"Additionally, there will be internal detection systems within and between buildings."
Mrs Roberts said the facility was named after the native Western Australian evergreen shrub and followed extensive consultations with the local community advisory group.
"Local residents have played an important role in all facets of the planning and development of this new pre-release centre for women, including its name," she said.
The Minister said the Department of Justice had recently embarked on a process of reform for managing women prisoners in WA.
Lack of education, training, employment and life skills were key factors in offending, and women prisoners often battled health and relationship issues.

"Research indicates that simply 'warehousing' prisoners without addressing offending behaviour doesn't work," Mrs Roberts said.
"The Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women will emphasise family support, parenting, life skills and community involvement to ensure those issues are addressed.
"Until these issues are addressed, the prisoners cannot turn their lives around."
