WA Residential Battery Scheme
Applications for rebates and loans under the WA Battery Scheme are now open. Use the page below to learn more information and how to apply.
What is a Residential Battery?
A residential home battery stores electricity for later use. It does this by charging up when there is cheap excess electricity and discharging energy when the grid is busy and electricity is more expensive.
What is the WA Residential Battery Scheme?
The WA Residential Battery Scheme allows you to access a rebate and/or a no-interest loan to purchase and install a battery to power your home.
Battery Rebates
The WA Government’s scheme is in addition to the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. On a 10kWh battery applicants are eligible for a combined rebate of:
- $5,000 for Synergy customers
- $7,500 for Horizon Power customers
No-interest loans
No-interest loans will also be available for up to $10,000 to households with a combined annual income of less than $210,000. Loan repayment periods will be up to 10 years.
To receive a battery rebate and/or no-interest loan through the scheme, eligibility requirements apply, including participation in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?
A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP, connects, coordinates and stores the power generated by household solar panels, batteries, and other energy resources to be used to support the electricity needs of the community.
How do residential batteries help me and my community?
Through VPPs, households will be able to sell energy stored in their battery back to the market. VPP’s help the community by:
- balancing supply and demand
- offering financial benefits to participating households
- helping WA’s clean energy transition
How do I apply for the WA Battery Rebate?
To apply, you will need to:
- Read eligibility criteria and information for applicants.
- Read advice from Consumer Protection
- Get quotes from approved battery retailers to discuss an approved battery product and/or no-interest loan.
- Select the approved vendor and products that are right for you.
- Your battery vendor will submit the application on your behalf.
- If applying for a no-interest loan you will be contacted by Plenti, The Scheme's third-party administrator.
Can the rebate be applied retrospectively?
Show moreCan the rebate be applied retrospectively?
No, the rebate cannot be applied retrospectively.
How do I know if I am eligible for the WA Battery Scheme?
Show moreHouseholds must hold either a Synergy or Horizon Power electricity account to access the WA Rebate. Households with an off-grid electricity system can access the Federal Battery Scheme.
Long-term rental properties are eligible for the WA Scheme, subject to agreement by the landlord and tenant on the battery installation.
How do I claim the Federal and State battery rebates?
Show moreApproved WA rebate and loan funds from an approved application will be paid directly to the accredited vendor.
The battery retailer will also manage applications to the Federal battery scheme and this money will also reduce the cost of a battery system, similar to the process for purchasing solar panels.
How many rebates are there under the WA Battery Scheme?
Show moreWith the introduction of the Federal Battery Program the number of rebates available under the WA Battery Scheme has been increased by 80%, from 20,000 to 100,000.
What if I have committed to purchase a battery that is not on the approved list?
Show moreIf you have paid a deposit and the quoted battery and/or inverter are not on the approved equipment list, we recommend that you speak with your battery retailer. Reputable suppliers will work with you to requote an eligible system or provide a refund.
Why are Synergy and Horizon Power customers getting different rebates?
Show moreSynergy and Horizon Power do not service the same area. Horizon Power services the remote regions of WA that are not a part of the Southwest Interconnected System. The additional rebate for Horizon Power customers is acknowledging that energy costs and the cost of installation are higher in remote regions.
