On 17 November 2023, the Hon. Bill Johnston MLA, Minister for Energy announced the establishment of PoweringWA at the WA Energy Transition Summit. PoweringWA is being established to coordinate the delivery of transmission, renewable generation, and storage infrastructure to support the decarbonisation of the State’s main electricity grid – the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

PoweringWA will coordinate the actions needed to deliver the electricity infrastructure required to decarbonise the SWIS and will:

  • streamline the development of transmission, renewable electricity generation and battery storage projects;
  • work with government partners and stakeholders across the entire electricity value chain;
  • engage with communities and Aboriginal people; and
  • ensure robust foundations are in place for investment in electricity infrastructure.

Located within the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, PoweringWA will coordinate the build of transmission, renewable generation, and storage infrastructure.

A Stakeholder forum will be held online on 30 November 2023. This will provide information on PoweringWA as well as an update on the implementation of the SWIS Demand Assessment. Register here.
