It was following a recommendation from a friend that Darellyn Ogilvie found herself applying for the Aboriginal Traineeship Program and the rest, as they say, is history.
Darellyn, who grew up in Perth and moved to Broome with her son for a sea change in 2017, commenced her traineeship in 2018 at WA Country Health Service’s Kimberley Regional Office.
Darellyn said that right from beginning, the opportunities she was offered were amazing.
“As part of my traineeship I got the chance to act as Executive Secretary in Corporate Services and then in Clinical Services, as well as Administration Officer in the Regional Emergency Operation Centre”, Darellyn said.
This year has brought challenges like no other, however Darellyn has taken them all in her stride.
“Working in the health sector during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging but was an experience I will have with me for the rest of my life.
“It is something I will always be proud to have been a part of.”
Darellyn is currently Acting Coordinator of Property and Fleet and has recently been selected to be a part of the Aspiring Leaders Program along with 17 of her Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues. The program will see her complete a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
The Aboriginal Traineeship Program is one of the ways the Public Sector Commission is working to create a future-fit, collaborative and diverse public sector, and help today’s young people develop the skills to be tomorrow’s leaders.
“I am so grateful to have been part of the Aboriginal Traineeship Program.
“I would recommend it to anyone in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community who is not sure where to start and looking to get their foot in the door in the public sector.
“The program has given me the opportunity to work in government and build on and work toward a successful career.”
