On 16 April 2024, the Electricity Industry Amendment (Alternative Electricity Services) Bill 2023 passed through the Western Australian Parliament, giving effect to the Alternative Electricity Services (AES) framework.
The AES framework will be used to extend customer protections to new and emerging electricity services. The AES framework enables a flexible and lower-cost approach to regulation, overseen by the Economic Regulation Authority. The framework allows tailored and fit-for-purpose customer protections to be applied to each regulated service.
Embedded networks and On-site power Supply Arrangements (OPSA) are the first two services being considered for regulation under AES.
