The Government Sector Labour Relations Graduate Program, within the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, provides a unique opportunity for people interested in industrial relations or employee relations to kickstart their career. 

The program provides graduates with ongoing development opportunities and support, enabling them to build rewarding careers in the public sector.

Chelsea, who joined the department through the graduate program in 2024, has since advanced to the role of Senior Labour Relations Adviser, where she has had the opportunity to work on influential reform projects that impact the wider public sector.

“The work we do is incredibly fulfilling, and I’m proud that I was able to contribute towards the development of the 2026 Wages Policy which applies to approximately 180,000 public sector employees.”

During the 12-month graduate program, Chelsea had the opportunity to work across all three core functions, which diversified her skillset by dealing with complex issues, and enhancing her stakeholder management and critical thinking skills.

“Through training and job shadowing, I’ve learnt the importance of active listening and working collaboratively to achieve a desired outcome. This continued exposure has significantly helped me in my role today as a Senior Labour Relations Adviser.”

Chelsea’s experience in the graduate program has led her to take on the Government Sector Labour Relations Graduate Coordinator role alongside her full-time position to ensure future graduates feel supported in the early stages of their labour relations careers. 

“Your first full time job outside of university can often feel very daunting, so I want to provide a welcoming and safe environment for our graduates to thrive in.”

Applications for the 2026 program will open in August and anyone who is interested in building a career in labour relations is encouraged to apply.
