National Careers Week (11 to 17 May) is a chance to explore different pathways and learn more about how careers take shape in the public sector.

Across Western Australia, the public sector works closely with universities to better understand what students and graduates are looking for and to improve early career experiences. This includes conversations about recruitment, development, inclusion and transitioning from study into work.

The Public Sector Early Careers Network brings together universities and government agencies to share insights and strengthen early career pathways.

Recently, representatives from all 5 Western Australian universities and 10 agencies – including hiring managers and graduate program coordinators – came together for a panel discussion on student expectations and workforce needs.

“As a graduate program coordinator, it was incredibly valuable to have open and honest conversations with universities,” says Elle, Agency Graduate Program Coordinator at the Office of the Auditor General. “Hearing directly about student expectations helps us design programs that are clearer, more inclusive and more meaningful for future graduates.”

Sarah, a Learning and Development Consultant at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, agrees: “Sessions like these help agencies think long term about workforce pipelines, not just the next intake of grads.”

For students and graduates, this work helps create better pathways into the sector with increased visibility of roles, improved recruitment experiences and stronger support once you start your career.

Through ‘A place of opportunity’ you can find out about graduate programs and early career roles across the WA public sector, understand where your degree might fit and learn more about what working in the public sector looks like.
