National Science Week has kicked off in Western Australia, featuring dozens of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities and events across the State.
Running from 9 to 17 August 2025, National Science Week is Australia's largest annual celebration of STEM.
This year’s theme for National Science Week is ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language.’
The week provides opportunities for Western Australians to explore and celebrate science by taking part in activities, in-person and online events, talks, podcasts, at-home activities and competitions.
“National Science Week is a fantastic opportunity to explore and discover more about science and technology in Western Australia, with exciting events and experiences happening right across the State,” said Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson.
“WA is home to an outstanding community of scientists, researchers, and innovators. National Science Week is a chance to celebrate their work and inspire the next generation."
National Science Week WA activities are coordinated by the Western Australian Coordinating Committee (the WACC), a group of WA STEM organisations working together under the Inspiring Australia initiative, supported by the Australian Government, Scitech and the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification.
In 2025, the WACC has distributed nearly $90,000 worth of grants to 19 organisations for community events across the State.
National Science Week aligns with the State’s STEM skills strategy, which is developing a strong culture where STEM is supported and celebrated by the whole community.
“The WA Government remains committed to strengthening state’s STEM culture,” said Minister Dawson.
“This focus is embedded in our skills strategy and supported by a range of targeted programs and initiatives.
“I encourage everyone to take part in the events on offer and experience firsthand the creativity and impact of science and technology in our everyday lives."
