The latest crop variety information to assist Western Australian grain growers with planting decisions for 2025 is now available.

The 2025 Western Australian Crop Sowing Guide provides critical information to support variety decisions for each of the major crops for the upcoming season.

The comprehensive guide is produced by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and features the latest data from its own research work and from the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s National Variety Trials (NVT).

DPIRD Crop Science and Grain Production manager Bob French said the annual publication had been updated with the latest agronomic information and industry developments to help growers optimise crop potential.

“This includes disease ratings and market-delivery information for wheat, barley, oats, canola and pulses, including lupin, lentil, field pea, chickpea, faba bean and vetch,” Dr French said.

“The 2025 guide features information on 20 new variety releases, including six wheat, four feed barley and five barley varieties currently under malt evaluation, one lentil and nine canola varieties.

“In the guide, the grains research team use data from DPIRD trials and their many years of experience to add more information to what is available from the NVT website about current variety choices for each crop.”

Dr French said with variable seasons in 2022 and 2023, it was important for growers to recognise how this may influence a variety or crop’s performance.

“It is critical to view variety performance over multiple years to better understand how a variety might perform across variable seasons,” he said.

“The guide provides valuable additional context and interpretation of the data generated by the NVT program on varietal performance and disease and agronomic traits.

“Growers can have greater confidence in the performance of varieties with more extensive testing in NVT and DPIRD trials and should take this into account before making variety selections or increasing the scale of planting of any variety.”

The 2025 Western Australian Crop Sowing Guide can be found online at www.agric.wa.gov.au/barley/2025-wa-crop-sowing-guide, with hard copies available from DPIRD offices, selected rural suppliers and on request from the DPIRD website.
