Ethos, pathos and logos are not just part of the Greek language, when considered together they form the Aristotle rhetorical triangle, which is still a useful workplace skill in 2021!

This was a learning for participants in our 2021 Graduate Launch Program when they took a step back in time to learn about the great philosopher’s modes of persuasion in module 3 of the year-long program.

Ally Denning from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries said she learnt the importance of clear communication, how to persuade using logic, emotion and authority and how to transform big challenges into manageable tasks.

“The module provided me with useful tools when entering or initiating difficult conversations in the workplace,” she said.

“We explored modes of persuasion through the lens of ethos, logos and pathos”.

In case you were wondering, ethos is the use of character, credibility and ethics, logos is logical reasoning and evidence, and pathos is involves emotion and passion.

Finishing the day with lots of energy, the graduates used phrases they had learned in the session to role play a range of scenarios relating to difficult conversations in the workplace.
