The Western Australian (WA) Government is seeking industry feedback on the local green steel industry in order to determine what is required to grow green steel production in the State.

The expression of interest (EOI) will establish a comprehensive understanding on industry goals for local production along with current expectations regarding government support.

Green steel is made by reusing scrap steel from sources such as decommissioned plants and equipment.

The Government is seeking to inform the future purchase of local manufactured green steel to supply major government projects. The future projects will be extensive and include railways, roads, transmission lines, as well as future hospital building projects.

Through this information, the Government will achieve a detailed understanding of local capability for supply of green steel, gaps, opportunities and the forms of government support sought for green steel manufacturing.

The EOI aims to capture information surrounding:

  • future plans for locally manufactured green steel products
  • potential capacity of the industry and timelines for production
  • level of government support sought to facilitate green steel manufacturing in WA
