The Environmental Industry Secondment Program is an opportunity for environmental professionals currently working within the resources sector to gain first-hand experience in environmental assessment at the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE).
The program is designed to enhance collaboration between industry and government, assist in the delivery of risk-based and timely assessments of applications, and strengthen public confidence in environmental decision-making.
The opportunity offers:
- training and experience in department processes undertaken to assess environmental applications lodged under relevant legislation;
- understanding key information required by the department to assess applications from industry and make decisions;
- internal training, development and mentoring;
- gaining an understanding of future strategic directions for DMPE in environmental approvals and compliance; and
- opportunities to expand professional networks.
Environmental Industry Secondment program details
In the upcoming rotation, secondees will have a hands-on role assessing native vegetation clearing permits (NVCPs) under the Environmental Protection Act 1986, in the Mine Closure and Environmental Services Branch.
DMPE is looking to take on new rotation of secondees from October, however timings and periods of rotation can be negotiated.
Placement details:
- Time commitment: full time
- Length of internship: 6–12 months
- Work location: Mineral House, East Perth
- Renumeration: to be paid by current employer at current rate.

Expressions of interest for the next Environmental Industry Secondment placements close on Friday 16 October, however DMPE will except expressions of interest for future secondments at any time.
