Western Australian livestock producers with an interest in precision sheep management and data driven decision making are invited to host a demonstration site for a national project.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is seeking sheep producers to participate in the Precision Sheep Management project to build business productivity and profitability.

DPIRD and Murdoch University are leading the WA component of the collaborative project, co-funded by Australian Wool Innovation and Meat and Livestock Australia and led by Adelaide University, alongside State and private collaborators.

Department development officer Darren De Vos said demonstration sites would be tailored to match participants’ interests and priorities to help improve the productivity and profitability of their sheep businesses.

“There are great opportunities for the sheep industry to use electronic identification, known as eID, to full potential by capturing data to aid sheep and flock management decisions,” he said.

“Hosting a demonstration site will give participants an opportunity to better understand the performance of their flock and make lasting improvements to their businesses, all supported by the project team.

“We are keen to hear from producers with a range of interests and business priorities who would like gain a better understanding of the performance of their sheep flock and build their confidence in making data informed decisions.”

Precision sheep management can be applied across all aspects of a sheep enterprise, including nutrition and feed management, livestock husbandry, reproduction strategies, weaner performance, breeding objectives and flock turnoff.

Participants will be supported by the Precision Sheep Management team throughout the project, from establishing strategies that suit their business goals through to scheduled site visits, data collection and analysis.

For more information on the Precision Sheep Management project and to register an expression of interest by 30 April visit the Producer Sites webpage or email darren.devos@dpird.wa.gov.au
