Families from Fremantle and nearby suburbs are invited to join free bike riding events for a wheelie good time!

Kick things off with a scenic, guided bike ride across Stirling Bridge on Sunday, 12 April from
2-4 pm. This activity seeks to improve bike riding skills and confidence to navigate from Fremantle to North Fremantle while the neighbouring Fremantle Traffic Bridge is closed. It’s also an opportunity to hear stories about the history of Fremantle along the way.

The fun continues on Saturday 2 May, with a glow ride along the North Fremantle Heritage Trail. Starting at sunset, families can dress up their bicycles with glow sticks before a fun and gentle-paced ride that will light up the landscape. Participants will receive a food voucher to use after the ride, and can enjoy face painting, music and other fun activities.

DTMI Director Active Transport Michelle Prior says having community events helps to increase riding confidence in a fun, supported way.

“It’s important to offer these activities for the Fremantle community, during a time of traffic disruption.

“These experiences aim to boost people’s riding skills and confidence, help them navigate the local area and connect with their surroundings and community, in a new and different way.”

Activities are part of the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure’s (DTMI) efforts to encourage people to consider more active ways to travel around the area, particularly while the Fremantle Traffic Bridge is closed.

“These events might even spark a new or reignited interest and enjoyment in bike riding - it’s a great method of travel, cheap and environmentally friendly - and could be the prompt people need to incorporate riding as part of their everyday journeys and experiences, particularly as the bridge works are underway.”

Michelle also said as the weather cools, people can easily keep being active outside by planning their journey and making smart clothing choices.

For more information and to register for events, visit the DTMI Humanitix page.

Participants must bring their own bikes and helmets. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Young children on bikes must also have adequate riding skills to be able to take part.
