The latest market trends, innovations, research, challenges and solutions in Western Australian horticulture production will be examined at the State’s premier industry conference in Perth in October.
The 2025 WA Horticulture Update, hosted by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), will bring together growers, researchers, policy makers and industry leaders at the biennial event.
The conference theme ‘Growing WA – fresh food, sustainable futures’ has shaped a thought provoking program that will explore challenges and opportunities across the industry.
DPIRD Intensive and Irrigated Plant Systems Executive Director Sam Oakden said the conference would provide valuable industry insights that would benefit growers, scientists, consultants and supply chain businesses.
“The packed program will be led by keynote speaker Grant Dusting, from research consultants McCrindle, whose ‘Feeding the Future’ presentation will explore the challenges associated with satisfying consumer demands in coming years,” Mr Oakden said.
“This will be followed by a grower-led panel discussion unpacking strategies to increase productivity and economic sustainability.
“AUSVEG Chief Executive Officer Michael Cootes will join another panel session on Reconnecting Consumers to Growers and Rebuilding Value, reframing fresh produce as an essential investment in public health and community nutrition.
“The Tools for Tomorrow session will feature Hort Innovation’s Head of Sustainability R&D Kathryn Young, who will profile a range of collaborations and how they benefit industry.
“Australian Fresh Produce Alliance CEO Claire McClelland will walk conference attendees through the climate adaptation tools on offer to support businesses.
“DPIRD will showcase a number of the latest R&D projects, including the drainage water recycling field trial, the Narrow Orchard Systems initiative and the PIPS for Profit project to improve orchard profitability and sustainability.”
The presentations will conclude with former Australian cricketer, turned leadership coach Brad Hogg, who will share his career learnings on the value of mindset, teamwork and facing challenges to achieve success.
A complementary trade show display will feature a range exhibitors showcasing agricultural inputs, services, farm machinery and equipment, ag-tech, markets, insurance, food security, community support and agricultural workwear.
The program includes ample time for conference delegates to talk to exhibitors, network and enjoy an afternoon sundowner.
