DPIRD Entomologist Elsie Kinnaird
Elsie’s role at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development involves researching the biology and impact certain insect species could have in Western Australia.
WA has earned a global reputation for producing food and drink that is clean, safe and free from pests and diseases. If an exotic insect threat is detected, experts like Elsie provide advice based on scientific evidence to support decision making.
An average day sees Elsie researching the risk of potential exotic pest insect species on various items entering the State. “I am a biosecurity entomologist, so I am always promoting WA’s biosecurity systems. Chuck your forbidden fruits in the Ag bins at the airport everyone! WA doesn’t want coddling moth or other pests lurking over east entering our State,” she said.
“Hands down, insects are the most amazing animals to ever exist – along with dogs of course! Their ability to survive in some of the harshest landscapes on earth and evolve incredibly intimate symbiotic relationships and life histories never ceases to amaze me. Just Google Lycaenid butterflies and ants.”
