The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (the department) has released a guide note on the management of subsisting petroleum and geothermal energy titles.
The guide note will have immediate effect and provide clarity to stakeholders on:
- how the department will manage applications to create subsisting titles; and
- considerations for post-grant approvals and activities made pursuant to the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967.
The department incorporated feedback – garnered during an 8-week public consultation period in late 2023 – from industry stakeholders to finalise the guidance material.
The feedback was a critical component in ensuring the department met the expected detail required to guide affected stakeholders.
For more information download the ‘Response to submissions – Guide note on the management of subsisting petroleum and geothermal titles' document.
The department will continue to provide further updates on the management of subsisting titles in the lead up to the implementation of the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Act 2024.
The updates will incorporate considerations for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) titles. GHG titles will be able to subsist with both petroleum and geothermal energy titles. A further public consultation will occur to invite comments on the updates.
