The State Government has today released the South West Interconnected System Transmission Plan, a blueprint to build the power grid needed to support the State’s clean energy transition and make Western Australia a renewable energy powerhouse. It outlines the transmission build required to facilitate the phase-out of coal generation, support the widespread electrification of existing industries, and enable the new load connections needed to diversify and strengthen WA’s economy.

Phase One of Plan will unlock new renewable energy generation capacity, including 1 GW of new capacity in the north of the network and 1.6 GW to the east, enabling the retirement of all State-owned coal generation assets by 2030.

Phase Two will deliver the transmission infrastructure needed to provide renewable energy to households, schools, hospitals and small businesses, while supporting new industries like green steel and battery production. Beyond 2035, planning for Phase Three projects will include close consultation with industry and comprehensive system modelling and planning exercises to ensure our evolving energy needs inform the build.

The Plan also creates significant opportunities for WA workers and businesses. It outlines a firm pipeline of projects that gives our workforce and businesses the certainty and confidence they need to grow their transmission manufacturing capacity – helping create local jobs and investment.

The State Government will continue to engage with industry and community stakeholders to ensure the energy transition, including the implementation of the Plan, maximises benefits for all Western Australians.

Energy Policy WA and Western Power will host an informational online webinar to provide an outline of the Plan and answer any questions you may have.
