The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) encourages all West Australians to consider where food and fibre comes from and appreciate our diverse and innovative agriculture industry.

Primary Industries Development Deputy Director General Cec McConnell said National Ag Day, 17 November, was the one day to celebrate an industry that is part of our every day lives.

“Agriculture plays a unique role in our society and is a major economic driver and vital lifeline for our rural communities,” Ms McConnell said.

‘‘WA produces one of the world’s largest range of food and fibre within a single State, as we farm from the sub tropics in the north to the cool temperatures of the south.

“There is no better time to thank and acknowledge our farmers who have faced some major challenges in recent years, including floods, drought, bushfires and dramatically reduced livestock prices.”

To further support our primary industries, DPIRD has stood up a seasonal response team across the department to ensure resources and expertise are in place to assist industry through the next four to six months.

DPIRD will continue to monitor the season and update information to support industry through its Season 2023 webpage accessed via the website homepage www.agric.wa.gov.au.

Ms McConnell said DPIRD was committed to working with industry and had a strong focus on supporting mental health, land condition and animal welfare, as well as associated businesses.

“We want to ensure farmers and business owners experiencing hardship have access to the relevant support services,” she said.

“On National Ag Day, we ask you to think about how important agriculture is and celebrate our hardworking farmers who put food on your table and clothes on your back, day in day out.”
