The nominees for the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration’s 2026 Resources Sector Awards for Excellence are presenting a series of outstanding contributions to conservation initiatives, regional community programs and site rehabilitation.
From conserving a rare wetland ecosystem to researching the behaviour of birds and bats; and partnering with regional school communities to using AI to monitor Northern Quoll populations, collectively 13 programs are in the running for either the Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence or the Community Partnership Award.
The Golden Gecko Award recognises leading practices and innovation in environmental management, while providing a platform for government, industry and the community to share experiences. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the award, with nine eligible projects considered. Read more about the nominees and their projects.
The Community Partnership Award recognises outstanding partnerships between the WA resources sector and local communities that deliver lasting benefits, showcase leadership and promote responsible development. Read about the four projects that are eligible for the Community Partnership Award.
“Once again, in 2026 we have an outstanding range of companies and organisations across Western Australia’s resources sector delivering substantial contributions to regional communities and environmentally sustainable development,” said DMPE Director General Chris Shaw.
“The Resources Sector Awards are again recognising outstanding achievements in environmental management and community partnerships, and it’s notable that we are seeing more companies using developments in technology to develop innovative solutions.
“I hope everyone involved in WA’s resources sector is able to learn more about the groundbreaking projects and real-world solutions that will be showcased at this year’s event.”
Award recipients will be announced by the Minister for Mines, Petroleum and Exploration, Hon. Daniel Pastorelli MLA, on 19 October 2026.
