The crash occurred shortly after take-off near Thomson Bay on Tuesday 7 January 2025. Water Police patrol officers were among the first responders, working alongside emergency services, specialist police divers, and members of the public who acted without hesitation to assist those on board.
Despite the immediate and determined response, the incident claimed three lives. For officers involved, the operation was complex and emotionally challenging, spanning both rescue and recovery phases.
Last week, survivor Jeremy Connor and his wife Patricia met with Rottnest Island authorities and first responders at a small commemorative gathering by the Swan River, presenting a plaque and expressing their gratitude.
“From the moment we were able to get out of the plane, people had selflessly rushed to help,” Mr Connor said.
“It’s an opportunity for us to say thank you to everyone who responded and assisted, whilst also saying that our thoughts are with everyone else who was on the plane, their families and loved ones.”
Emergency Services Minister Hon. Paul Papalia CSC MLA attended the gathering, acknowledging the professionalism shown across agencies, including civilian vessel operators who were first on scene.
Fremantle District Inspector Steve Walters reflected on the conditions faced by officers during the operation.
“WA Police remain committed to ensuring community safety and we train and learn from events like these so that we can continue to improve our service to the community,” Insp Walters said.
The incident remains a reminder of the unpredictable nature of policing and the professionalism of officers who respond when it matters most.
