More than 170 policy makers from almost 30 WA and federal government agencies attended the forum, which opened with a Welcome to Country from Barry McGuire OAM and an address on the current state of the Western Australian economy from Acting Under Treasurer Michael Court.
The keynote was delivered by Professor Sharon Parker, John Curtin Distinguished Professor and Director of the Centre for Transformative Work Design, a world-leading voice on AI and the future of work.
Her message focused on how getting the most from AI depended less on the technology and more on how work is designed around it. She encouraged a sociotechnical rather than technocentric approach to AI.
‘AI mostly changes tasks, not whole jobs or occupations,’ Professor Paker said. ‘This means work design questions become crucial.’
A panel discussion about AI's potential economic impacts followed, facilitated by Clara Cuevas (Treasury and Finance) alongside Dr Marcus Tan (Wellspring Group and Foundation), Dr Ramon Wenzel (Social Ventures Australia) and Dr Lynn Riggs (Treasury and Finance).
