Appointment of the Director General of the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration.

Following the Premier's announcement of Public Sector Reform, the Resource and Environmental Regulation function of the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety will become the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration on 1 July 2025.

The Premier has since announced that from 4 August 2025, Mr Chris Shaw will take up the position of Director General of the new Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration.

Mr Shaw’s appointment leverages his extensive experience leading large teams in the areas of regulatory decision‑making, strategic policy and major reforms for the resources and environmental management sectors.

Mr Shaw is currently Deputy Director General Approvals at the Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Previous roles include Deputy Director General – Hydrogen and Future Fuels at Queensland Department of Energy and Public Works; Executive Director – Georesources Policy at Queensland Department of Resources; and Executive Director – Onshore Gas Reform at the Northern Territory Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
