Four Western Australians have received recognition as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List

Dr John Byrne, WA Commissioner for Equal Opportunity, was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for his significant contributions to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and to social justice.

The Public Service Medal was awarded to three outstanding public sector employees.

This award recognises employees at local, state and federal levels of government who have shown outstanding service whether through innovation, leadership, and achievement.

Michael Barnes, Under Treasurer, was recognised for his achievements and commitment to State Government finances, assisting the Government to repair the State’s finances and providing key strategic advice on the GST reforms.

Heather Brayford, Deputy Director General at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, was recognised for exemplary leadership in legislative reform and policy for the sustainability of WA fisheries and aquatic resources, playing a key role in managing the balance between economic, environmental and social benefits.

John Fischer, Executive Director of Infrastructure at the Department of Education, was recognised for his committed and dedicated service over a long and distinguished career in the Departments of Education, Transport, Planning and Infrastructure, and Main Roads. He has overseen many public infrastructure projects, including the Graham Farmer Freeway, which have benefited the community and economy.
