Transforming WA cinematography through local capability investment
Perth-based Raz Studios is redefining advanced cinematography in Western Australia (WA) through the integration of cutting-edge motion control robotics. The studio identified a major opportunity to strengthen local production capability, as WA filmmakers had long relied on interstate providers for high-speed, precision-controlled camera movements. This reliance created delays, increased costs and limited the competitiveness of the local screen industry.
Through support from the Local Capability Fund’s Digital Transformation Round, Raz Studios invested in a state-of-the-art motion control robotic system. By supporting emerging creative industries, this investment helps build capacity to attract new commercial opportunities.
Overcoming WA’s reliance on interstate film technology
Before the project, WA had limited access to high-speed, precision-controlled cinematography equipment. Production companies were forced to source motion control services from interstate, resulting in higher costs, longer lead times and reduced flexibility during shoots. These limitations made it difficult for local studios to compete for premium commercial work or deliver the complex visual sequences increasingly demanded by clients.
For Raz Studios, this gap represented both a barrier and an opportunity. Without access to advanced robotics, the studio risked losing high-value projects to interstate competitors. At the same time, the absence of local capability meant WA’s broader film industry could not fully participate in emerging markets such as high-speed product cinematography, visual effects-driven advertising and precision-based creative content.
The challenge was clear: to build a world-class technical capability in WA that would reduce reliance on external suppliers, improve industry competitiveness and unlock new commercial pathways for local creatives.
Building world-class capability with DEED support
With assistance from the Digital Transformation Round, an initiative of the WA Government’s Digital Industries Acceleration Strategy, Raz Studios invested in a state-of-the-art motion control robotic system capable of delivering high-speed cinematography, precision-controlled camera movements and complex visual sequences. The technology streamlined production workflows, reduced post-production time and enabled the studio to offer services previously unavailable in WA. The investment also allowed Raz Studios to diversify its business model. In addition to in-house production, the studio introduced motion control equipment rentals, technical workshops and training opportunities for industry professionals. This directly supports DEED objectives by strengthening local industry capability, fostering innovation and preparing WA’s creative sector for future growth opportunities including WA’s first ever dedicated screen production facility, Perth Films Studios.
Driving industry growth, new revenue and state-wide capability
Within six months of implementation, Raz Studios recorded a 10% increase in turnover, secured three new contracts valued at $150,000, and launched new revenue streams through training and education services. Productivity improved significantly, with the robotics reducing shoot durations, minimising retakes and lowering crew requirements for complex shots, delivering substantial cost savings for clients.
The project also generated broader industry benefits. Raz Studios became the only facility in WA offering high-speed, precision-controlled cinematography, attracting interstate and international clients and positioning the studio strongly for the Perth Film Studio’s opening. The team gained industry recognition through invitations to showcase the technology at major events such as the PADC Awards and Oasis Ball and began early collaborations with Edith Cowan University to support skills development in motion control cinematography.
The integration of robotics has also improved on‑set safety and supported sustainability goals by reducing resource wastage during production.
