The Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) graduate program can be a genuine stepping stone into permanent employment within the department and a successful career in the public sector.
No one knows this better than James, who started in the Graduate Program in 2008 and progressed to Senior Financial Analyst, specialising in financial modelling.
“I’ve worked across a range of finance and policy areas, developing expertise in financial analysis, modelling, and strategic funding initiatives that support the department’s objectives,” said James.
In 2008, the department wasn’t known as LGIRS, but the Department of Industry and Resources. Similar to how the graduate program functions now, James had the opportunity to rotate around the department, choosing to gain exposure in Petroleum Regulation, Science and Innovation, and State Development.
“These rotations gave me valuable insight into how different parts of the department operated, broadened my understanding of government, and helped me develop strong financial, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills early in my career.”
A standout in James’ career has been contributing to the development of the business case for implementing a best-practice cost recovery model to fund safety regulation across Western Australia’s resources industry.
His role involved undertaking financial modelling, developing funding methodologies, and calculating annual cost recovery rates to support a sustainable regulatory framework.
“It was rewarding to be part of a project that led to a significant increase in departmental staffing capacity and established a long-term, sustainable funding source that continues to support the department’s regulatory activities today.”
James encourages others to apply to the graduate program if they’re looking for a career that offers variety, continuous learning, and opportunities to grow.
“It provides exposure to a wide range of business areas beyond your area of expertise, allowing you to build a broad understanding of how government operates. You’ll also benefit from strong mentoring and support, which is invaluable in helping you develop your skills, build confidence, and establish your career,” he continues.
“My advice is to be open to every rotation – you never know where it might lead or what opportunities it could open up.”
