Celebrating its 50th year, SPE Offshore Europe 2023, the 4-day conference drew almost 30,000 attendees and more than 800 exhibitors to Aberdeen.

The event brought together key players from the oil and gas sector and the energy value chain to collaborate on emerging opportunities.

As a key initiative of the LNG Jobs Taskforce, the delegation attended SPE OE23 to promote WA’s energy sector to the rest of the world. Western Australia’s abundant natural resources, world-class infrastructure, research capabilities and skilled workforce were all on show at the exhibition stand.

This conference was an opportunity for the delegation to connect with other attendees and exhibitors and showcase WA as a preeminent destination for investment, home to major oil and gas producers, and low-carbon energy initiatives and projects.

Minister McGurk shared the jobs and business opportunities available in WA and what the State Government is doing to transition to a low-carbon future economy at the WA Government’s networking event.

In addition to the conference, delegates participated in a roundtable discussion focused on workforce matters relating to the energy transition. The session highlighted how both Aberdeen and WA could collaborate to meet shared workforce needs in the face of rapid change and high demand. As a member of the World Energy City Partnership (WECP), Perth was represented at the Aberdeen-Norway Gateway Business Lunch. Discussions centred on the opportunity for collaboration and knowledge exchange between Aberdeen, Stavanger (Norway) and Perth to support each other as they undergo an energy transition.

In a first for the city, Perth is set to host the WECP Partnership AGM from 1-3 November 2023, this will bring together cities from across the world that are committed to fostering the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

The WA delegation also visited a Shell gas plant and was given an overview of the Acorn Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) project. Acorn CCS is one of 4 clusters in the UK progressing CCS projects contributing to economic growth opportunities during its transition to net zero emissions.

International collaboration such as this is essential to maximise opportunities in the rapidly evolving energy sectors and to secure investment in WA projects.
